Changes in immigration policy have been imposed in recent weeks, causing confusion to immigrants and the organizations that support them.

On May 11, the United States lifted a pandemic rule known as Title 42 that allowed for immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border to be returned swiftly. Individuals who unlawfully cross the U.S. Southwest border will be removed and barred from reentry to the United States for at least five years.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice also announced last week a new rule to further incentivize individuals to use lawful pathways to enter the United States.

The changes follow President Biden’s push to allow certain migrants from Haitians, Venezuelans, Nicaraguans and Cubans to enter the country legally.

Details of the changes are spelled out in these two articles from the New York Times and Associated Press.
