It seems impossible that summer is over, but signs are everywhere, as students get ready to start school and temperatures cool, however slightly. Fall makes us think of back-to-school, and for La Colectiva, our first Cumbre para Padres Hispanos, or parent summit, to be held in October at DelTech Owens Campus in Georgetown. Last year, we began a journey to host our first Arsht Cannon Fellow, educator Mauricio Salinas, and engage in research and development of an Hispanic parent engagement project and pilot. Over the course of this year, a group of educators, advocates and parents have been meeting and talking about what parents need and best practices for Hispanic parent engagement in schools. The result is our first half-day summit, which will include multiple sessions that address key topics for parent involvement in schools, led in Spanish and English, and facilitated by parents, educators and advocates. Our goal is to create a welcoming environment for parents where they can express their needs and concerns, and come away with concrete information and strategies so they can be agents for their children’s success in school.

This summer also brought our first Cultivando Lideres interns, local students on break who joined us to start a social media project focused on messages about healthy communities and vital conditions. Our interns got tips and advice on branding, marketing, and using new tools, from our partner Hook PR. You can see some of the results for creating a thriving natural world on Facebook and TikTok.
