INDIVIDUAL STORIES
A woman needed assistance with divorce and custody from a spouse who became an addict and was incarcerated. We helped her with her petitions. Many months later, she said she would never have been able to get custody of her child without La Esperanza. She stated that she was so glad that we assisted her.
An older client with medical issues wanted to renew his health benefits. He was unable to because he lost his Social Security card and couldn’t get a new one without proof of his immigration status. We talked with him to learn his immigration history and found a solution. We filed his application in January 2022. He received his green card in July and is receiving his health benefits.
In January, a client came to the office, desperate. Her husband died in October and she had no income. She lost her Social Security benefits. Her home had no heat. We helped get her payments reinstated and referred the case to the Delaware Housing Assistance Program, which approved benefits a month later.
