The Thriving Newcomers Project brings together La Esperanza and the Haitian Coalition of Delaware to support Latino and Haitian communities in Sussex County. Supported by the Regional Foundation, the project collaborates with resident leaders to address key challenges, including:

  • Childcare
  • Immigration

Community members play a vital role by leading advisory groups and gathering feedback through surveys and forums.


Key Issues Identified

Based on a survey of 433 Sussex County residents, primarily Hispanic and Haitian:

  • Top concerns for both groups
    • Housing affordability
    • Employment opportunities
  • Specific concerns by group
    • Hispanic residents: Healthcare access
    • Haitian residents: Education
  • Shared challenges
    • Language barriers
    • Childcare access
    • Immigration-related issues
  • Clear need for culturally appropriate services, especially in
    • Education
    • Childcare

The Work Ahead

  • Unite resident leaders and stakeholders through training programs and a retreat.
